Winter rye
As a food raw material and a feed base, rye is a very promising crop, especially on land unsuitable for wheat and barley. Winter rye is a cereal that can serve both as a food raw material and as feed for livestock and poultry. Today there are more than 40 varieties of this cereal.
Winter rye is usually an annual crop, but cross-breeding has produced a perennial variety that is used for fattening cattle. Breeders are constantly working to improve the grain and raise yields. By increasing the number of chromosomes, for example, they have developed winter rye varieties with larger grain and a stem that is less prone to lodging.
Advantages of winter rye
Compared with its closest competitors, wheat and barley, winter rye has a number of advantages. Rye grain contains up to 13% protein and about 61% carbohydrates, as well as a large amount of vitamins and amino acids. 800 grams of rye bread can fully cover a person’s daily calorie needs. The proteins in winter rye are very well digested by livestock, so some farms use it as hay. Winter rye can also be sown on fields infested with parasitic plants: thanks to intensive tillering it is quite resistant to weeds.
Sandy fields free of weeds do not need ploughing — disc cultivation is enough. Rye is harvested with a combine in exactly the same way as wheat.

About 20 winter rye varieties are officially registered in Ukraine, and each soil type calls for a suitable variety. Preparing land for rye differs little from preparing a field for wheat. A major advantage is that rye yields do not drop with repeated sowing. Organic and mineral fertilisers are used to increase yields.
