Barley — an undemanding, high-yielding cereal
Winter barley is an annual plant sown almost everywhere in Ukraine. There are many varieties of winter barley today, each with its own strengths and weaknesses:
- Metelytsia, Avans, Voskhod, Luran and others give higher yields but are less resistant to low temperatures;
- Dnister, Dobrynia 3, Mykhailo, Seim and others are less demanding of soil and sowing conditions.
Winter barley contains a lot of starch — up to 75% — and up to 12% protein, as well as a large amount of amino acids found only in this type of cereal.
Barley in the food industry and for livestock feed
Winter barley has a wide range of uses. First of all, it is the main feed base of any farm: its chemical composition is ideal for fattening cattle.
Barley is widely used in the food industry to make pearl barley, barley groats and beverages. Winter barley is also supplied to breweries.
Winter barley yields best after legumes
Winter barley is fairly demanding in terms of temperature and soil quality, but thanks to its high yield and nutritional value it is profitable to grow. It should be sown on weed-free fields. Barley does especially well after legumes and spring wheat, and worse after rye.
